THE FUTURE OF
AGRICULTURE IN PAKISTAN
Agriculture as defined in the Dictionary of Sociology
by Fairchild is the utilization of humanly useful plants and animals. It is
wrong to consider agriculture as only tilling of land but agriculture industry
is a very wide term. It includes, apart from tilling the land, many other
activities of the human beings like horticulture, sericulture, forestry,
fishing, animal breeding and poultry farming etc.
Agriculture is the oldest known profession of man and
even today about two-thirds of the world population is engaged in this industry.
As regards Pakistan about 50 percent to total population is directly department
on agriculture. All over the world agriculture industry, which is primary in
nature, supplies the raw material to tether manufacturing industries. The
entire world population also depends upon agriculture for their good and such
other necessities. Agriculture is one of the importance industries which is
receiving high priority of the Government of Pakistan in her annual budgets and
planning. About 80 percent of the foreign exchange is being earned by
agriculture industry, while about 55 percent of the labor force and 270 percent
of the total population is depending upon agriculture. Approximately, 45
percent of the national income is being earned from the agriculture sector.
Pakistan is predominantly and agricultural country, naturally
if her agricultural production is low, the country’s prosperity is stake. It is
obvious that the country’s agricultural yield is quite low which is due to a
number of drawback in agricultural operation and organization. The man behind
the plough is also responsible for low agricultural production Pakistan has to
overcome the shortcomings. There is need to improve agricultural production by
utilize all resources whatsoever. In fact the future of Pakistan lies in the
better future of agriculture.
